Building bridges across borders
Sunday, November 9, 9:30 to 10:15 a.m.
In the parish hall
Human rights advocate and activist Elena Casillas Hoffman will join us virtually to discuss the issue of immigration from her perspective as Communications Specialist for the Iowa Migrant Movement for Justice (MMJ). A nonprofit that provides legal assistance and other services to immigrants and refugees, MMJ is an affiliate of the Immigration Law & Justice Network.

After earning her degree in Global Resource Systems at Iowa State University in 2016, Elena went on to receive her master’s in Ethics, Peace, and Human Rights from American University in Washington, D.C., in 2022. Along the way, she worked in an array of internships and jobs in community-based nonprofits, including a summer internship in Cusco Peru working alongside Indigenous communities.

Elena is the daughter of parishioners Marc and Cecelia Hoffman, was raised in both San Antonio and the Chicago area, and lives in Des Moines with her partner.
